(Maclura tinctoria) – This Argentine species of Osage Orange is a rich-yellow color. Consisting of darker- and lighter-yellow bands. Very stable, durable and strong. Much larger, higher-quality lumber than available from American Osage Tap tone that has been compared to Brazillian RW. This wood has very straight grain, a very fast response and long sustain, just what the doctor ordered. Osage also makes a terrific bridge plate so save all of your left overs ! U.S.A. Osage is difficult to obtain as it usually doesn't grow very straight and the trunks are typically small in diameter. If you haven't tried Osage I would encourage you to as it is a very underestimated tonewood in all respects. | ||

"This guitar has the same outline as a Martin OM. Nut= 1 13/16", string spacing at bridge = 2 3/8", top is Englemann spruce, neck is mahogany, trim and bridge are rosewood (with maple veneer between the rosewood and the fustic. What makes this guitar worthy of the posting is the sound. I am used to making good sounding guitars (this one is #36). This one may be the best sounding I have ever made. It is loud with good bass and a very full sound. The fustic started out very yellow when it was cut. It has been darkening toward brown in the month since I sprayed the finish. I hope a little of the yellow remains. The sound of this is so fantastic, I am going to build a few more. Al Carruth says the Osage Orange is a "drop-in replacement" for Brazilian rosewood. I have played a few Brazilian rosewood instruments in my lifetime. This one exceeds them all." See more of Bob's work here. |
