 The heartwood is a light pink-brown that darkens when cut to a reddish brown. It has a medium to coarse texture and a straight to interlocked grain, which can yield a striped or rope figure. The wood finishes well and has a lustrous quality.

The Mustapick Fan-Fret Baritone Guitar

Matt's description:

I was approached by a customer who was accustomed to playing in DADGAD and was interested in dropping this tuning down a whole step, to CGCFGC, and then occasionally lowering the sixth string an additional whole step, to Bb. Mike and I talked over the possibilities and decided on a a long-scale fan fretted design. The scale length of the first string is 28.25" and the scale length of the 6th string is 29". The general length of th strings allows the guitar to be tuned lower while maintaining standard string tension, so that the instrument will retain good power and clarity. The additional length provided by the fan-fretting also provides a slight measure of extra tension for when Mike tunes the 6th string lower still. Mike and I chose to use the body shape and dimensions of the Deep Baritone Model to support the low frequencies.

Mike also opted for an additional soundhole to be cut into the upper bout of the side. Without taking anything away from the forward volume and projection of the instrument, this feature provides the player with a front row seat. It's especially applicable to baritone-range instruments because it preferentially passes bass frequencies. This is because there are longer standing waves inside the guitar in the orientation from one rim to the other. This guitar was a real success and I hope to build more like it. As of this writing a potential customer is considering one already.

This Grand Concert built by Matt Mustapick features a bearclaw figured Sitka spruce top, African mahogany back and sides, curly koa binding, a thuya burl rosette, and cocobolo bridge, fingerboard and headplate veneers.
